Comprehensive Eye Exams

A comprehensive dilated eye exam is a painless procedure in which an eye care professional examines your eyes to look for common vision problems and eye diseases, many of which have no early warning signs. Regular comprehensive eye exams can help you protect your sight and make sure that you are seeing your best.

What does a comprehensive dilated eye exam include? A comprehensive eye exam includes measurement of your visual acuity (how well you see at various distances), binocular function (how well your eyes work together), color vision testing, tonometry (measurement of the pressure inside your eyes using a quick puff of air onto the eye, or gently apply a pressure-sensitive tip near or against the eye), visual field testing, and dilation.

What does dilation involve? Drops are placed in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupils. Your eye care professional then uses a special magnifying lens to examine your retina to look for signs of damage and other eye problems, such as diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration. A dilated eye exam also allows your doctor to check for damage to the optic nerve that occurs when a person has glaucoma. After the examination, your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours and you can also experience temporary sensitivity to light.

 The Dilated eye

What is a non-mydriatic fundus photo? Although our doctors will encourage dilation to most patients, some may choose not to be dilated for a variety of reasons. Patients under the age of 60 (and without any past history of eye disease or systemic health issues), can choose to have photographs taken of the inside of their eyes. Our sophisticated fundus camera allows the doctor to have a view that is very similar to the view they get post dilation…all without the drops!

When we do eye exams, we refuse to cut corners. We always schedule ample time so you will never feel rushed. We provide complete eye care for both adults and children. Our comprehensive eye examinations check your eyes inside and out for glaucoma, cataracts and all other eye diseases as well as high blood pressure, diabetes and other systemic diseases. Your visual skills and abilities are carefully evaluated and we pride ourselves on the accuracy of our eyeglass prescriptions. Depending on your needs, we will also fit you into contact lenses or perform a low vision refraction.
